Skills Camps are meant to enhance your outdoor experience. Leaving behind the logistics of expedition travel, there is more time to concentrate on hard skills. Master that river roll, lay back that crack, or start a fire faster than you can say Tom Hanks. Take a camp on its own, or in combination with an expedition, and watch your skills levels take off!

Dates:
July 1-6, 2007
Spots Available: 10

IMPORTANT: All camps need a minimum enrolment of 6 to run. Each expedition has a maximum of 10 participants.

A WYLD EXPEDITION demands a lot from its participants. It asks you to lead your group and to follow, to be resourceful and creative and to explore and discover. It requires you to learn and master new skills, to build your level of fitness and confidence, and to work together with your team. In return, it gives you the opportunity to see and do things that you once could only dream of. It offers you the chance to push your self to the limit, and bring home more than you left with.

WHITEWATER KAYAKING ON THE GOLD RIVER

The 6-day River Runners course is a skills camp that teaches you all about the amazing sport of whitewater kayaking and how to safely enjoy and appreciate rivers.

Like every WYLD EXPEDITION, your group fully participates in every aspect of traveling and surviving in this experience. This includes setting up and breaking down camp, planning and cooking meals, loading and unloading equipment, and ultimately the task of working together as a team.

Expert instruction and guidance help you and your group to achieve your goals. All of our instructors are highly qualified guides and outdoor educators, who endeavor to share with you their knowledge and experience.

ITINERARY

whitewaterDAY 1
The group is picked up in Campbell River and driven to Strathcona Park Lodge. This first afternoon is a chance for everyone to get introduced to each other and to the equipment you will be using for the next week. As you are camping all week, your instructors teach you the Backcountry Basics, which include outdoor cooking, campsite selection, shelter building, and minimum impact camping. You'll camp on Upper Campbell Lake for the first night.

DAY 2
The next day, the group is introduced to the fundamentals of kayaking. Most of this takes place on flat water so that you can learn all the strokes and balancing techniques. Once everyone is feeling confident and psyched, its time to go to the river! You'll travel to Gold River and set up your base camp for the week.

DAY 3
Now it's time to experiment with moving water! You begin moving in the current and your instructors teach you what to do if you flip over. Other lessons are covered on river dynamics, safety and river running. Once the group is ready, you begin running whitewater.

DAY 4-5
The next couple of days are spent paddling and playing. Now that you have the hang of things, you are able to start using your boat to play. Surfing, enders, squirts, and cartwheels are some of tricks that you can hope to achieve. On reaching the last few days of your program, you have honed many of your camping skills, allowing you and your group to take over more of the responsibility from your instructors. This is your opportunity to use all that you have learned to help you succeed.

DAY 6
Your final day has you up early for one last paddle before you are on your way back to Campbell River. By now, you have shared untold experiences with your fellow participants, learned many things about yourself and the people around you, and accomplished things you could have never done alone. The trust and teamwork that has grown between you and your group is an important key to the success of your expedition and ultimately, your experience.
