A WYLD EXPEDITION demands a lot from its participants. It asks you to lead your group and to follow, to be resourceful and creative and to explore and discover. It requires you to learn and master new skills, to build your level of fitness and confidence, and to work together with your team. In return, it will give you the opportunity to see and do things that you once could only dream of. It will offer you the chance to push your self to the limit, and bring home more than you left with.

SEA KAYAKING IN NOOTKA SOUND!
This expedition takes place in spectacular Nootka Sound, just to the west of Strathcona Provincial Park, the oldest provincial park in British Columbia. From remote inlets to secluded sand beaches, and from tidal pools to rich native history, the West Coast of Vancouver Island is an adventurer’s paradise.Kayak launching

The 8-day Nootka Adventure course takes you through this awesome landscape andteaches you to enjoy and appreciate the wilderness. Like every WYLD EXPEDITION, you fully participate in every aspect of traveling and living this wilderness experience, including setting up and breaking down camp, planning and cooking meals, navigating and route finding over land and sea and learning about your natural surroundings.

Expert instruction and guidance help you and your group to achieve your goals. All of our instructors are highly qualified guides and outdoor educators, who endeavour to share with you their knowledge and experience as they teach you to live and travel in the wild.

You begin your course at our headquarters, Strathcona Park Lodge and Outdoor Education Centre where you’ll meet your group members and begin preparation for your expedition, including an introduction to sea kayaking skills, strokes and rescues. Your first night is spent outdoors at our base camp shelter.

The adventure beings the next day as you are dropped off on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, in Nootka Sound. Over the next several days time is spent learning the Backcountry Basics as well as exploring the islands, beaches and shores of Nootka Sound. You may spend time fishing for dinner, or scrambling around tidal pools teeming with new and exciting sights, or you may just lay back and float, enjoying the peaceful solitude of the Sound. Being in the wilderness means attending to the essentials; you’ll need to find a location to camp and prepare for your evening. A campsite must be selected and shelters set up, dinner must be organized and prepared and a fire lit for warmth. Tomorrow is another day, with more adventures just around the corner

During your exploration of Nootka Sound you may visit Friendly Cove where Captain Cook landed in 1778. Here you are introduced to the First Nations people and culture of this region. As days pass you find you have honed many of your camping skills and your group begins to take over more responsibility from your instructors. You have become a self-sufficient expedition group and the final phase of your expedition is your chance to fully manage the navigation, campsite selection and set-up, and meal planning and preparation. It is your opportunity to use everything you have learned to finish your journey and succeed, as a team.

By trips end you have shared countless experiences with your fellow participants, learned many things about yourself and the people around you, and have accomplished things you could have never done alone. The trust and teamwork that has grown between you and your group is an important key to the success of your expedition and ultimately, your experience. On your last day head back to base for a celebratory feast and your final night together as a group.

On your journey home reflect on the shared experiences you've had, the things you've learned about yourself and the people around you, what you accomplished together that might not have been possible on your own and the sheer beauty of the natural world. We thank you for choosing WYLD!
