CANOEING, HIKING & MORE!
Expert instruction and guidance help you and your group to achieve your goals. All of our instructors are highly qualified guides and outdoor educators, who endeavour to share with you their knowledge and experience as they teach you to live and travel in the wild. You begin your course at our headquarters, Strathcona Park Lodge and Outdoor Education Centre where you’ll meet your group members and begin preparation for your expedition. Your first night is spent in the Lodge. The adventure beings the next morning on our High Ropes Challenge Course, suspended forty feet off the forest floor. You’ll have the opportunity to face the challenge course obstacles, and with encouragement from your newfound friends, build confidence in yourself and trust in your team-mates. In the afternoon you depart on a three-day canoe trip on Upper Campbell and Buttle Lakes where you spend time learning the Backcountry Basics as well as exploring the lakes and shoreline. You might take side trips into the river mouths, looking for waterfalls or for the perfect swimming spot, or you may just lay back and float, enjoying the peaceful solitude of the wilderness. Being in the wilderness means attending to the essentials; you’ll need to find a location to camp and prepare for the night. A campsite must be selected and tarps set up, dinner must be organized and prepared and a fire lit for warmth. Tomorrow is another day, with more adventures just around the corner. Upon return from your canoe trip you’ll spend the afternoon getting familiar with a bit of vertical – start your intro rock climbing session with some bouldering on our indoor rock wall and then head to the crag for a try on the real thing. You’ll learn rock climbing etiquette, proper harnessing, climbing, belaying and rappelling technique. After your climb, enjoy a meal in the Whale Room and a night at the Lodge. The final phase of your expedition takes you on a three-day hike along the Elk River Trail to Landslide Lake. This journey travels through some of the most incredible old growth forest on Vancouver Island. You have become a self-sufficient expedition group and this final leg is your chance to fully manage the navigation, campsite selection and set-up, and meal planning and preparation. It is your opportunity to use everything you have learned to finish your journey, as a team. Upon completion of your hike, head back for a celebratory feast in the Whale Room and your final night together as a group in the comforts of the Lodge. On your journey home reflect on the shared experiences you've had, the things you've learned about yourself and the people around you, what you accomplished together that might not have been possible on your own and the sheer beauty of the natural world. We thank you for choosing WYLD! |
